GrammarВ vs НА
В vs НА
Both в and на can translate as “in / on / at”, and choosing between them can be difficult. Example:
- (I’m at school.)
- (I’m at work.)
The good news: there’s a clear default rule, plus a fixed list of words that always take на. Learn the rule, memorise the list, and you’ve covered most cases.
The core idea
- в = inside an enclosed space or within an area — “in / into”.
- на = on a surface, or at an open place, event or activity — “on / at”.
| в — inside / within | на — on / at |
|---|---|
| (in the house) | (on the table) |
| (in the room) | (on the wall) |
| (in the city) | (outside / on the street) |
| (in the book) | (on the page) |
Both take the prepositional case when you’re saying where something is.
The на list — words to memorise
A set group of nouns takes на even though English would use “in / at” and even though they feel “enclosed”. They fall into recognisable groups:
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Open / large spaces | (on the street, outside) (in the square) (in nature, outdoors) (in the field) |
| Events & activities | (at work) (in class) (at a concert) (at a meeting) (at the exam) (at a wedding) |
| Certain places (by convention) | (at the (railway) station) (at the post office) (at the plant / factory) (at the factory) (at the station / stop) (at the market) (in the kitchen) |
| Points of the compass / sides | (in the north) (in the south) (in the east) (in the west) |
| Some regions & islands | (in the Caucasus) (in the Urals) (in Cyprus) (in Cuba) |
There’s no deep logic to learn these one by one — treat them as vocabulary. A few common ones contrast neatly with a в-word: на заво́де (at the factory) but в о́фисе (in the office); на уро́ке (in class) but в шко́ле (at school).
A note on Украи́на. The traditional form was на Украи́не, but the current standard — and the form preferred in Ukraine — is в Украи́не. The choice is politically sensitive; в Украи́не is the safe, modern option.
Where vs. where-to: detect it from the case
The same preposition (в or на) is used both for a static location and for motion towards - but you can tell by the case used:
- Где? (where?) → prepositional case.
- Куда́? (where to?) → accusative case.
- Отку́да? (where from?) → genitive, with a different preposition (see below).
| Word | Где? (prep.) | Куда́? (acc.) | Отку́да? (gen.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| шко́ла (в-word) | в шко́ле | в шко́лу | из шко́лы |
| рабо́та (на-word) | на рабо́те | на рабо́ту | с рабо́ты |
- (I’m at school.) — (I’m going to school.)
- (I’m at work.) — (I’m going to work.)
“From”: use из and с
Each preposition has its own “out of” partner, and you must match them:
- в → из (“out of”): в шко́лу → из шко́лы
- на → с (“off / from”): на рабо́ту → с рабо́ты
The rule is: however you went in, that’s how you come out. If the place takes на, its “from” is с - never из.
- (I came back from work.) — not из рабо́ты
- (She came from the south.)
- (He left the house.)
Transport: на (by)
To go by car or by bus etc: use на + prepositional:
- на маши́не (by car), на по́езде (by train), на авто́бусе (by bus), на самолёте (by plane), на метро́ (by metro)
- Exception: пешко́м (on foot) - with this word no preposition.
Compare “by” (на) with physically “inside” (в): Я е́ду на маши́не. (I’m going by car.) vs Я сижу́ в маши́не. (I’m sitting in the car.)
Common mistakes
- Using в for a на-word.
в рабо́те (wrong for “at work”) → на рабо́те (correct) - Forgetting to change the case for motion. “where” ≠ “where to”.
Я иду́ в шко́ле. (wrong) → Я иду́ в шко́лу. (correct) - Using из with a на-word. The partner of на is с.
из рабо́ты (wrong) → с рабо́ты (correct) - Saying в маши́не for “by car”. Transport uses на: на маши́не.
Summary
- в = inside / within; на = on a surface, or at an open place / event / activity.
- A fixed list always takes на: на рабо́те, на уро́ке, на вокза́ле, на по́чте, на се́вере… — memorise it.
- Same preposition, different case: Где? → prepositional (в шко́ле), Куда́? → accusative (в шко́лу).
- “From”: в → из, на → с. Match the pair (с рабо́ты, not из рабо́ты).
- Transport “by” uses на: на по́езде; but пешко́м = on foot.
