GrammarFleeting Vowels

Fleeting Vowels

A fleeting vowel — Russian бе́глая гла́сная (“fugitive / mobile vowel”) — is a vowel о, е or ё that appears in one form of a word but drops out as soon as an ending is added. The classic example: оте́ц (father) keeps its е in the nominative, but loses it everywhere else — отца́, отцу́, отцо́м. The vowel isn’t part of the “real” stem; it’s only there to break up an awkward consonant cluster when there’s no ending to help.

The core idea

Russian dislikes a word that ends in two hard consonants with no vowel between them. A fleeting vowel is the language’s way of fixing that:

  • When a form has no ending (or a “zero” ending), the vowel is inserted to make the word pronounceable: отЕц, о́кОн.
  • When an ending is added, the vowel is no longer needed and drops out: отц-а́, окн-о́.

So the same word alternates between “vowel” and “no vowel” depending on whether the ending is present. This shows up in two very common situations, described below.

Situation 1 — masculine nouns that DROP the vowel

Many masculine nouns have a fleeting vowel in the nominative singular (the dictionary form, which has a zero ending). The moment you decline them — genitive, dative, and so on — an ending appears, and the vowel disappears:

Nominative (has the vowel)Genitive (vowel gone)
оте́цотца́(father)
деньдня(day)
ку́соккуска́(piece)
у́голугла́(corner)
ого́ньогня́(fire)
ве́терве́тра(wind)
лёдльда(ice)
сонсна(sleep, dream)

Once the vowel drops in the genitive, it stays gone for every other case: оте́цотца́, отцу́, отца́, отцо́м, об отце́. The nominative is the odd one out.

Situation 2 — genitive plural that INSERTS a vowel

The opposite happens with many neuter and feminine nouns. Their stem ends in a consonant cluster, and the genitive plural has a zero ending (no -ов, no -ей). With nothing to lean on, a fleeting vowel is slipped in to split the cluster:

Nominative sg. (cluster)Genitive pl. (vowel inserted)
окно́о́кон(window)
письмо́пи́сем(letter)
сестра́сестёр(sister)
ку́клаку́кол(doll)
де́вушкаде́вушек(girl)
ло́жкало́жек(spoon)
де́ньгиде́нег(money)

Here the vowel behaves in reverse: it is absent from the base form and appears only in the ending-less genitive plural. Compare одно́ окно́мно́го о́кон (one window — many windows).

The two directions at a glance

Which vowel appears — о, е or ё?

You can usually predict the vowel from the consonants around it. This is a practical rule of thumb, not an ironclad law:

Use…When…Example
оbetween two hard consonantsку́сок, о́кон, ку́кол
еnext to a soft consonant, й, or a hushing sound (ж, ш, ч, щ)оте́ц, день, пи́сем, ло́жек
ёlike е, but the fleeting vowel is stressedсестёр, ого́ньогня́ (cf. stressed ё)

A quick sanity check: if the word already shows е or ё in its base form (like оте́ц, ве́тер, лёд), that same letter is the fleeting one — you just delete it. For inserted vowels, hard clusters take о, soft ones take е/ё.

Beyond nouns: short-form adjectives

The same alternation shows up in the masculine short form of some adjectives, which also has a zero ending. A fleeting vowel is inserted to break the final cluster:

  • у́мныйумён (smart → he is smart), but feminine умна́, plural умны́ keep no vowel.
  • больно́йбо́лен (sick → he is sick).
  • по́лныйпо́лон (full → it is full).

As with nouns, the vowel appears only in the ending-less form and vanishes once an ending (-а, -о, -ы) is added.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the vowel when declining.
    отеца́ (wrong)отца́ (correct)
  • Adding an ending to the genitive plural. These words take a zero ending — the inserted vowel is the change.
    окно́в (wrong)о́кон (correct)
  • Forgetting the vowel is only in the nominative.
    в дене́ (wrong)в дне / в день (correct — no fleeting е)
  • Choosing the wrong vowel. A hard cluster wants о, not е: ку́сек (wrong)ку́сок (correct).

Summary

  • A fleeting vowel (о / е / ё) appears only when there is no ending, and drops out when an ending is added.
  • Drops when declined: masculine nouns lose the vowel outside the nominative — оте́цотца́, деньдня, у́голугла́.
  • Inserted in the gen. plural: neuter/feminine nouns split their cluster — окно́о́кон, сестра́сестёр, ло́жкало́жек.
  • Vowel choice: о between hard consonants, е near soft/hushing ones, ё when stressed.
  • Short-form adjectives do it too: у́мныйумён.
