GrammarPrefixes

Prefixes

Russian builds an enormous number of verbs by gluing a small prefix (приста́вка) onto a root verb. A prefix does two jobs at once: it usually turns the verb perfective (see verb aspects), and it changes the meaning — often in a systematic, predictable way. Learn the handful of common prefixes and their core senses, and dozens of new verbs suddenly start to make sense.

One root, many verbs

Take the root писа́ть (to write). Each prefix bends the meaning in a different direction:

VerbMeaning
написа́тьwrite / finish writing (the plain perfective)
переписа́тьrewrite / copy out
подписа́тьsign (write under)
записа́тьwrite down / record
вы́писатьwrite out / discharge (e.g. from hospital)
описа́тьdescribe (write around)
расписа́тьсяsign one’s name / register a marriage

Notice that the core idea of “writing” stays, while the prefix adds a direction, a completion, or a nuance. This is the pattern behind most of the Russian vocabulary you will meet.

The most common prefixes

Each prefix has a core sense that shows up again and again. Here are the ones to know first:

PrefixCore meaningExample
по-a bit / start of an actionпоговори́ть (talk a while)
при-arrival / towards / attachingприйти́ (arrive)
у-away / offуйти́ (leave)
вы-outвы́йти (exit)
в(о)-in / intoвойти́ (enter)
от(о)-away from / detachотойти́ (step away)
до-up to / reach a pointдойти́ (reach on foot)
за-begin / drop by / behindзаговори́ть (start talking)
пере-across / re- (again)перейти́ (cross)
про-through / pastпройти́ (pass through)
раз-/рас-apart / un-разби́ть (smash apart)
с(о)-together / down / offсде́лать (do / complete)
об-/о-around / aboutописа́ть (describe)
под-up to / underподойти́ (approach)

Meanings are a guide, not a formula: the prefix often adds a figurative twist (по- in поня́ть = “understand” is not literally “a bit”). But the core sense is a reliable first bet.

Directional prefixes with motion verbs

Prefixes are clearest with verbs of motion like идти́ (go on foot) and е́хать (go by vehicle). Here the prefix simply tells you the direction:

VerbPrefix senseMeaning
прийти́при- towardsarrive
уйти́у- awayleave
войти́в- inenter
вы́йтивы- outexit
дойти́до- up toreach
перейти́пере- acrosscross
подойти́под- up toapproach
отойти́от- away fromstep away

Some examples in sentences:

  • По́езд пришёл во́время. (The train arrived on time.)
  • Он вы́шел из ко́мнаты. (He left the room.)
  • Мы перешли́ у́лицу. (We crossed the street.)
  • Официа́нт подошёл к столу́. (The waiter came up to the table.)

при- vs пре-

These two sound almost identical when unstressed, but they mean different things:

  • при- = approaching, a little, or attaching — прийти́ (arrive), приши́ть (sew on), приоткры́ть (open slightly).
  • пре- = very / over, like пере- — превы́сить (exceed), преувели́чить (exaggerate), прекра́сный (splendid, “very beautiful”).

A useful test: if you can replace it with “very” or пере-, it is пре-. If it is about coming closer or a small degree, it is при-.

Spelling: з or с?

A few prefixes ending in з change their final consonant depending on the sound that follows. This affects раз-/рас-, из-/ис- and без-/бес-:

  • Before a voiced consonant, keep з: разби́ть (smash apart), изгна́ть (banish), безду́мный (thoughtless).
  • Before a voiceless consonant, write с: расписа́ть (paint / paint over), испо́ртить (spoil), бесполе́зный (useless).

Compare the pair directly: разби́ть (б is voiced → з) vs расписа́ть (п is voiceless → с). You spell it the way it is pronounced.

The prefix с- is different: it is always written с, even before voiced sounds — сде́лать, сда́ть — although it is pronounced “z” there.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the prefix meaning is always literal. Many prefixed verbs are idiomatic — check the dictionary sense.
поня́ть (understand) is not “to a bit”.
  • Forgetting the prefix makes the verb perfective.
    Я написа́ть письмо́. (wrong)Я напишу́ письмо́. (I’ll write the letter — perfective future)
  • Spelling рас-/раз- by the root, not the sound.
    разписа́ть (wrong)расписа́ть (correct — before voiceless п)
  • Confusing при- and пре-.
    приувели́чить (wrong)преувели́чить (exaggerate)

Summary

  • A prefix usually makes a verb perfective and adds meaning at the same time.
  • One root can spawn many verbs: писа́тьнаписа́ть, переписа́ть, подписа́ть, записа́ть, описа́ть
  • Each prefix has a core sense (вы- out, при- towards, у- away, пере- across / re-) — clearest with motion verbs.
  • при- = approaching / a little; пре- = very / over (like пере-).
  • раз-/из-/без- keep з before voiced sounds, become с before voiceless ones.
