Нецензу́рщина is a collective noun referring to obscene or taboo language as a category, not to a single swear word. It is typically used in neutral or formal narration, journalism, or commentary to describe the presence or use of swearing, rather than to swear oneself. Because of this, it often sounds more bookish or official than colloquial alternatives.

The word commonly appears after verbs like использовать, употреблять, содержать and in phrases such as полон / полна нецензурщины. It is uncountable in practice and normally used in the singular; plural forms are theoretically possible but rare.

In everyday spoken Russian, speakers more often use colloquial terms such as мат or ругательства. Нецензу́рщина is preferred when one wants to sound detached, evaluative, or euphemistic, for example in media regulations, school rules, or formal criticism.

Stylistically, the word itself is not obscene and is safe to use in polite conversation, even though it refers to obscene language.
