The Russian word чеки́ст (chekíst) originally meant a member of the Cheka, the first Soviet secret police organization created after the 1917 revolution.
The Cheka (full name: All-Russian Extraordinary Commission) was founded by Felix Dzerzhinsky in 1917. Over time, чекист came to mean a member of Soviet or Russian state security services in general — including the NKVD, KGB, and sometimes today’s FSB. Depending on context, it can mean:
