Usage info
Can be encountered in the phrase "не лыком шит" which is roughly equivalent to "is/am/are no fool", "not born yesterday". In the past, bast shoes were associated with poverty and simplicity. So someone “sewn with bast” would metaphorically be rustic, unsophisticated, or naïve. Saying не лыком шит means the opposite, that this person is not simple, not naïve, not easily fooled.
