Of armed combat; usually с + instrumental (against someone) or за + accusative (for something).

to play (against someone), to compete, to battle it out
По вечера́м они́ сража́ются в ша́хматы.
In the evenings they battle it out at chess.
Colloquial and often playful: сражаться в шахматы / в карты.
