кинокарти́на

кинокарти́на is a formal word for a film, mostly used in written film journalism and officialese. The everyday word is фильм; in casual speech кино́ also works (mainly means cinema, but can also mean movie). Saying посмотре́ли но́вую кинокарти́ну to a friend sounds stiff or faintly ironic, like saying "motion picture" in English.

Inside the film world itself the live professional term is plain карти́на (карти́на вы́шла в прока́т, э́та карти́на получи́ла приз). кинокарти́на sounds like Soviet-era. кинофи́льм is in between; official, but not as dated.
