Of people: implies a violent or untimely death (war, accident, disaster), not a natural one.

to be destroyed, to perish, to be lost
Весь урожа́й поги́б от заморозков.
The whole harvest was destroyed by the frost.
Of plants, harvests, ships, or things that are lost for good.
Examples
Трое поги́бли, ещё тринадцать получи́ли ране́ния.
Three died. Thirteen others were wounded.
Тринадцать челове́к поги́бло.
Thirteen people were killed.
Самолёт упа́л, пассажи́ры поги́бли.
The plane crashed, and the passengers were killed.
В результа́те ава́рии води́тель получи́л си́льные поврежде́ния, а пассажи́р поги́б.
As a result of the car accident, the driver was severely injured, and the passanger died.
