Both imperfective and perfective (bi-aspectual verb).

to torment, to torture, to castigate
Он до сих пор казни́т себя́ за э́ту оши́бку.
He is still tormenting himself over that mistake.
Figurative; often reflexive: казнить себя 'reproach oneself bitterly'.

Examples

Он приказа́л: "Казни́ть нельзя, поми́ловать", однако, к несча́стью, секрета́рь написа́л: "Казни́ть, нельзя поми́ловать".
He ordered: “We cannot execute; pardon him,” but unfortunately the secretary wrote: “Execute; we cannot pardon him.”
