Он хвата́лся за пери́ла, что́бы не упа́сть.
He grabbed the railing so as not to fall.
Usually with за + accusative.
2.
to take up (eagerly), to throw oneself into, to rush into
Он хвата́ется за всё сра́зу.
He takes on everything at once.
Often implies doing too many things at once.
3.
(rare) to suddenly notice the absence (of), to suddenly remember
Он всегда́ хвата́ется кошелька́, когда́ уже́ вы́шел из дома.
He always notices his wallet is missing once he has already left the house.
With the genitive; the perfective хватиться is far more usual.

Examples

The gnarled branches scraped and grasped for me like living hands.
Утопающий хвата́ется за соло́минку.
A drowning man will clutch at a straw.

They held their sides with laughter at his joke.

I have so many things piled up that I don’t know where to start.
