Usage info

Иван Николаевич ничуть не растерялся в незнакомой обстановке и прямо устремился в коридор, рассуждая так: «Он, конечно, спрятался в ванной».

Can be similar in meaning to ситуация, but the latter is usually used to refer to specific situations or cases, while обстановка refers to a more general, wide overview.
