Object is an activity, attempt, hope or habit.

to leave alone
Журнали́сты не оставля́ют его в поко́е.
The journalists won't leave him alone.
Usually with в покое.

to keep (for oneself)
Я оставля́ю пода́рок себе.
I'm keeping the present for myself.
Typically with себе.
