He was strangling her, but she broke free.
Stress on the ending: души́ть (душу́, ду́шишь).

to stifle, to suppress, to suffocate
Власть души́ла свобо́ду сло́ва.
The authorities were stifling freedom of speech.
Also of smoke or heat: дым душит — the smoke is choking me.
3.
to perfume, to scent, to spray with perfume
Она́ души́ла плато́к духами.
She scented her handkerchief with perfume.
