verbmotion unidirectional (partner ходи́ть)aspect imperfective (partner пойти́)daily used word (top 100)Transportation - Basics 1
  • to go, to walk, to be going

    Unidirectional

    Я иду́ домо́й.

    I'm going home.

Motion info

идти́/ходи́ть is a verb of motion pair:

 · идти́ is unidirectional → go right now or in a specific single trip.

 · ходи́ть is multidirectional → habitual movement, repeated trips, or there-and-back movement.

Directionality and Aspect

идти́/ходи́ть are both imperfective and thus focus on the process. Use the perfective aspect partner instead if you want to describe a completed action (идти́пойти́ and ходи́тьсходи́ть).

When choosing a verb, step 1 is directionality (one trip vs repeated/there and back), then step 2 is aspect (process/result, ongoing/completed).

Usage info

(1) Unidirectional verb of motion (2) Travel by foot, especially in the past tense. (3) Note: used with trains 'Поезд идет': 'The train is travelling along'
