With uncountables and verbs it means "not much"; with countable plurals in the genitive, "few".

One day is not enough for me.
Often as a predicate: этого мало "that is not enough".

The words много, мало, немного, немало, сколько, несколько are used with different grammatical cases depending whether the object is countable or not: With genitive plural with countables and genitive singular with non-countables.
