1.
to strike, to hit, to punch, to lash
Он ударя́ет кулако́м по столу́.
He bangs his fist on the table.
Imperfective of «ударить»; often with «по» + dative or «в» + accusative for the spot hit.
2.
to stab, to slash
Он не́сколько раз ударя́ет ножо́м.
He stabs several times with the knife.
With the instrument in the instrumental case: «ударять ножом».
3.
to kick
Ма́льчик ударя́ет ного́й по мячу́.
The boy kicks the ball.
Usually with «ногой».

Examples

Мо́лния никогда не ударя́ет в одно и то же ме́сто дважды.
Lightning never strikes twice in the same place.
В Мэри три ра́за ударя́ла мо́лния.
Mary has been struck by lightning three times.
Ребёнком Том, ударяя костя́шками па́льцев по столу́, будто игра́л на бараба́нах, к недово́льству своего́ отца́.
As a child, Tom liked to pretend he was playing the drums by tapping his fingers on the kitchen table. His father was not pleased at all.
Во́ду нельзя раздели́ть, ударяя по ней па́лкой.
Water cannot be separated by hitting it with a stick.
