Both this word and особенный mean "special", but особый is more used for things that are particularly important, necessary for some circumstance, or non-standard: Для этого проекта требуется особый подход. This project requires a special approach. While особенный is more about being remarkable, unique, or of particular significance: Он особенный человек, всегда готов помочь. He’s a special person, always ready to help.
