Imperfective; typically with интересы, права, мнение, независимость.

(rare) to stand through, to stand for a whole while
Ей приходи́лось отста́ивать в о́череди по два ча́са.
She had to stand in the queue for two hours at a time.
Of standing in a queue or on duty for the full time; the perfective отстоять is more usual.
