Usually with от + genitive: shield from wind, sun, blows.

The cloud cover began to obscure the sun.
Of something standing in the way of one's view.
3.
to overshadow, to eclipse, to push into the background, to supplant
Новые забо́ты заслоня́ли от него ста́рые оби́ды.
New worries pushed his old grievances into the background.
Figurative: one thing makes another seem unimportant.
