to pretend, to feign, to act as if, to pass oneself off as
Он притвори́лся больным, что́бы не идти́ в шко́лу.
He pretended to be ill so he wouldn't have to go to school.
Usually with the instrumental (притвориться больным 'pretend to be ill') or with a clause introduced by будто/что.
