проси́ть

"просить" (perfective попросить) takes the Accusative or the Genitive for the thing requested, the same alternation as ждать, искать and требовать. It also has several frames for naming the person asked.

Accusative — a definite, concrete thing.

• Она попросила ключи. — She asked for the keys.
• Он просит деньги, которые ему должны. — He is asking for the money he is owed.

Genitive — something abstract, or an indefinite amount.

• Он просил денег. — He was asking for money. (some, an unspecified amount)
• Она просит помощи. — She is asking for help.

Normally Genitive whatever the context: "просить прощения" (to apologize), "просить разрешения" (to ask permission), "просить пощады" (to beg for mercy). The idiom "просить милостыню" (to beg for alms) is a fixed Accusative and goes the other way.

Naming the person asked:

• Я попросил у него денег. — I asked him for money. (у + Genitive)
• Я прошу вас о помощи. — I am asking you for help. (о + Prepositional)
• Он попросил меня закрыть окно. — He asked me to close the window. (Accusative + infinitive)

Do not confuse просить with спросить: просить is to request something or ask someone to act, спросить is to ask a question. Compare "Я попросил его об этом" (I asked him to do it) with "Я спросил его об этом" (I asked him about it).
