They deliberately plied him with drink so that he would sign the papers.
Imperfective; perfective опоить. Often implies doing so deliberately or with bad intent.

to give too much to drink, to harm by overwatering
Не опа́ивай ло́шадь сра́зу после скачки.
Don't give the horse too much water right after the race.
Typically of horses or cattle watered while still hot.

to poison (with a drink)

They were slowly poisoning her with some kind of brew.

(rare) to solder all around, to seal by solderingmetalworking
Ма́стер опа́ивает шов о́ловом.
The craftsman solders the seam all around with tin.
