We assumed that he had already left.
Somewhat bookish; has no perfective counterpart. Often with «что».
2.
(rare) to put (into), to devote, to lay down
Он полага́л все си́лы на общее дело.
He devoted all his strength to the common cause.
Elevated; mainly in set phrases such as «полагать все силы на что-либо».
