to double, to double up, to put together in twos, to fold double

He doubled the rope so it would not break.
Often of ropes, wires, rows or ranks.
2.
(rare) to repeat immediately, to do twice in a row, to double
Бараба́нщик сдвои́л уда́р.
The drummer repeated the beat at once.
3.
(rare) to plough a second time, to cross-ploughagriculture
Весной крестья́не сдвои́ли пар.
In spring the peasants ploughed the fallow a second time.
