Usage info

Both быть and являться express the idea of “being” or identity. However, быть is the neutral, everyday verb (often omitted in the present tense), while являться is a more formal, bookish equivalent used in definitions, academic writing, or official contexts. In casual speech, являться can sound overly formal or heavy, whereas быть (or no verb at all) is preferred.
