Often with от + genitive naming the attacker.

to protect oneself, to shield oneself
Зимой мы защища́емся от хо́лода тёплой оде́ждой.
In winter we protect ourselves from the cold with warm clothes.
With от + genitive naming what one is protected from.
3.
to defend one's thesisacademia
Она́ защища́ется в ию́не.
She is defending her thesis in June.
Academic usage: the candidate is the subject.
