In his mind he was transported back to his childhood.
Often of time: back to childhood, to another era; usually with мысленно or в + accusative.

to be carried, to be swept, to be blown
И́скры перенесли́сь ве́тром на сосе́днюю кры́шу.
The sparks were carried by the wind onto the neighbouring roof.
Of things moved by an outside force.
3.
to rush, to dash, to speed (somewhere)
За одну́ ночь мы перенесли́сь на другой коне́ц страны́.
In a single night we sped to the other end of the country.
Suggests an almost instantaneous move over a distance.
4.
(rare) to move (house), to relocate
Семья́ перенесла́сь в другой го́род.
The family moved to another town.
Dated; переехать is the usual word today.
