to pull oneself together, to brace oneself up, to smarten up
При ви́де нача́льника все сра́зу подтяну́лись.
At the sight of the boss everyone immediately pulled themselves together.
4.
(rare) to tighten one's belt
Солда́т подтяну́лся ремнём и вы́шел из пала́тки.
The soldier tightened his belt and stepped out of the tent.
Literal: adjust the belt tighter.
