Дед сиде́л на крыльце́ и попы́хивал тру́бкой.
Grandpa sat on the porch puffing away at his pipe.
Iterative: repeated small puffs, usually with the instrumental (попыхивать трубкой).
2.
puff (now and then), pant a little, chug (of an engine)
Парово́з ти́хо попы́хивал у платфо́рмы.
The steam engine was puffing quietly by the platform.
3.
(rare) sweat now and then, break a sweat every so often
Он попы́хивал от жары и вытира́л лоб.
He was sweating from the heat now and then and wiping his forehead.
Colloquial and uncommon.
