Maths came easily to him.
Usually with an adverb (легко, трудно, с трудом); the subject is the skill and the person stands in the dative. Imperfective: даваться.

Побе́да дала́сь нам дорогой цено́й.
The victory came at a high price for us.
Often with an expression of cost or effort.
- 3.
to let oneself be caught, to give in, to submit
Он не да́лся им в руки́.
He did not let them catch him.
Mostly negated, especially in не даться в руки.
Examples

It was difficult for him to finish his work.
