Usually negated: не удержался (от) + noun or и + verb = 'couldn't help doing'.

to keep one's balance, to hold on, to stay (in place), to hold out
Авто́бус ре́зко затормози́л, но я удержа́лся на нога́х.
The bus braked sharply but I kept my footing.
