Remorse took hold of him.
The feeling is the subject and the person stands in the instrumental: им овладел страх.
4.
to control oneself, to compose oneself, to pull oneself together
Он не смог овладе́ть собо́й.
He could not control himself.
Only in the phrase овладеть собой.
