Usually with «чтобы» or «за» + instrumental.

to trace, to track, to trace back, to retrace
Учёные проследи́ли путь реки́ до самого исто́ка.
The scientists traced the river's course all the way to its source.
3.
to shadow, to tail, to spy on, to observe
Он проследи́л за ней до самого дома.
He followed her all the way home.
With «за» + instrumental.

Examples
