His father belted him for bad marks.
Often драть ремнём 'give a belting'; драть за уши 'pull someone's ears'.

to charge (exorbitantly), to fleece, to rip off
В аэропо́рту деру́т за во́ду втро́е доро́же.
At the airport they charge three times as much for water.
Colloquial; usually драть с кого-либо (за что-либо).

Of bark, skin, wallpaper and the like.
